Nov 24 to Dec. 5 - Little R. to Beaufort (as in Bew), SC

Ok gang, it has been 50 days since leaving Annapolis. Here are a few trip stats.

Traveled 625 miles, motored 582, sailed 43.

Solomons is Lat 38.20 and Beaufort, SC is 32.25, so I'm about 360 miles south. So how did I travel 625 and only get 360 south? I do not know, that is what the log states.

Engine hours 113. Developed engine problem-more next post.

Weather data on LOON for November: Ave Low 51, High 63, Sunny days 49%, rainy 23% and cloudy 28%.

Laundry average is once a week, just like home. Funny though, don't ware clothes 2-3 days on land?

The following photos are from Little R., SC mm 346 to Beaufort, SC mm 536.

Near N. Myrtle Beach, MM 347, you enter the "Rockpile" on the ICW. The most demanding part (filled with rocks) is about 4-5 miles. This sign is serious!

All along this section of the ICW "Rocks" line the shore--right up to the channel.

Notice the location of the Red and the Rocks. You STAY IN THE CENTER and come to almost a stop when meeting traffic.

A little reminder. In NC contact bridges on VHF channel 13, SC and GA VHF channel 09.

Sign "RESUME SAFE SPEED"

All along the ICW there are signs: Slow No Wake and shortly after Resume Safe Speed. I get a kick out of these, so after seeing a 100 I wanted to share. Note: LOON does not change speed.

Beginning of Waccamaw R.

National Wildlife Refuge. Cypress Swamp.

Turtle on a log. Air that day was 55. Guess the rest of his gang went to FL.

Rainy Day--all day! La Fayette Bridge, Georgetown, SC. mm 401.

American Eagle, Easterville Minim Creek Canal.

Another Eagle. Can't hold the camera steady.

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

The piers go on for hundreds of yards. How much lumber?

Anchorage mm450. Two towers-how tall? 500, 700 ft.

Sunset, mm450.

Next morning, mm450, fog.

Fog. Waited an hour before leaving.

Supposed to be a dolphin-- 300 mm lens can't focus at 8 feet.

Heron.

Another 65' bridge but actually depends upon the tide.

Waiting for the famous Ben Sawyer Bridge to open. Just south of Isle Of Palms, SC. and north of Charleston. mm 462.

Sometimes you get bored waiting for the bridge.

Finally opening and 5 minutes late. Only bridge thus far that failed to open exactly on time.

Just North of Charleston Harbor. You can see the ship traffic.

Closer to the ship channel.

Looking East at Fort Sumter.

Charleston - Cooper R. Bridge.

Charleston.

Charleston waterfront- Colonial Mansions along the Battery, I think.

Stono R. Another very long pier.

As in NC, large homes everywhere.

More.

Anchorage, mm 495. Toogoodoo Cr. Most of the anchorages are simply cuts in the marsh off the ICW.

Ensign of the United States Sail and Power Squadrons. The training and experience gained from this organization prepared me for this trip.

Another anchorage off of the ICW. See the masts in the marsh.

Dawho R., mm 500. Current 2.3 to 2.6 knots and a deer decides to swim.

Still swimming.

Made it across.

South Edisto R. Tide range. Current at base.

Waterway Guide stated this daymark may be on shore at low tide. This is mark 177 at the entrance of Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff and Rock Cr. mm 516.

Another shot-- don't cut the marker.

Brickyard Cr. mm 530. Bad engineering or high tides? High tides.

Lady's Island Marina across the Beaufort R. from Beaufort. Joe, Marina Manager says tide range is 8 to 9 feet.

Next update, Thunderbolt, GA (just outside Savannah) where I will be a guest of Hinckley Yacht Yard. They learned of LOON's travels and want to work on her. HaHa--$$$.
